Canva AI Credits in 2026: What Free, Pro and Business Actually Get
Every article about Canva's AI limits still quotes the same number: 20 uses a month on the free plan. That number is gone from Canva's own pricing page. Here is what it says now, what our account actually burned, and the trial detail that catches almost everyone.
Short answer: Canva no longer tells you how many AI uses you get per month. As of 2 November 2026 the free plan is described as having "limited access to Standard and Premium AI tools", with no access to Ultra AI tools at all; Pro is 10x that allowance and Business is 20x. And one "use" is not one click — in our own test the free allowance was gone after a single background removal and a single AI presentation. Two tasks, not twenty.
1. What Canva actually says now
We opened Canva's pricing page on 2 November 2026 and read the "AI usage" line on every plan. This is the wording, not a paraphrase:
| Plan | Official AI usage line |
|---|---|
| Canva Free | "Limited access to Standard and Premium AI tools" — no access to Ultra AI tools or Affinity's Premium AI tools |
| Canva Pro | "10x more AI than Canva Free (Premium or Ultra AI)" + AI Pass add-on available at extra cost |
| Canva Business | "20x more AI than Canva Free (Premium or Ultra AI)" + AI Pass and AI top-ups available at extra cost |
| Canva Enterprise | "20x more AI than Canva Free (Premium or Ultra AI)" |
Note what is missing: a number. Every plan is now defined relative to the free plan, and the free plan is defined as "limited". That is not an oversight in their copy — it follows from how the metering works, which is the next section.
There is also a second axis that did not exist in older write-ups. Canva's AI is now tiered into Standard, Premium and Ultra AI. The free plan gets limited Standard and Premium, and zero Ultra. Pro and above unlock Ultra. So "how much AI do I get" is really two questions: which tiers can I touch, and how much of the pooled allowance do those tools drain.
2. Where the "20 uses" number went
In October 2026, Canva's own plan comparison listed the free allowance as 20 AI uses per month, against 200 on Pro, resetting on the 1st. We quoted that figure on our Canva free plan limits page because it was what the page said at the time.
When we re-read the same page on 2 November 2026, the number was gone. In its place: the multiplier wording above.
We are flagging this deliberately, because it means a large share of the "Canva AI limit" articles you will find — including some published this month — are quoting a figure the company no longer publishes. It might still be true internally. It is no longer something you can verify from the public page, and that is a meaningfully different situation.
3. What our account burned, task by task
This is the part that matters more than any published number. Here is what happened on our own free account in October 2026, in order:
| What we did | What it seemed to cost | What actually happened |
|---|---|---|
| One background removal, early in the month | 1 use | Worked. Crown-free, so it was within the free allowance |
| One AI presentation: outline generation | 1 use | Worked — it planned 8 slides with per-slide notes |
| Same session: generate the full deck | 1 use | Deck delivered, but the allowance was reported as spent |
| Anything AI after that | — | Blocked until 1 November |
Two tasks. Not twenty. Our account had used Canva's AI exactly once before that session — a single background removal — and the deck generation finished the month's allowance.
We cannot tell you the exact per-action cost, because Canva does not publish one and the UI does not show a running counter. What we can tell you is the practical consequence: if you plan to use AI generation for real work, treat the free allowance as a demo, not a monthly quota. One substantial generation can end it.
4. The trial trap
Buried in the same FAQ is a line we think costs people real money:
"AI allowance during trial is the same as Canva Free. Access the full allowance (10x more) when you start your paid plan."
Read that twice. If you start a 30-day Canva Pro trial expecting ten times the AI, you do not get it. During the trial you get what the free plan gets. The 10x only unlocks after you start paying.
So the "try Pro and see if the AI is worth it" plan does not test the thing you wanted to test. You can evaluate the editor, the templates and the export options during a trial. You cannot evaluate the AI allowance, because you are still on the free allowance while the trial runs.
5. Free vs Pro vs Business: who needs which
| If you… | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Use AI occasionally for one-off images or a short deck | Free is enough | You will hit the ceiling sometimes, but the export still works — see the loophole below |
| Generate decks or images weekly | Pro (US$144/yr, US$12/mo effective) | 10x the allowance and Ultra tools unlocked; the AI stops being the bottleneck |
| Run a small team that all uses AI | Business (US$250/yr) | 20x allowance, plus AI top-ups available as a one-time purchase |
| Want maximum AI without jumping a tier | Pro + AI Pass | Canva describes AI Pass as "40x more AI than Canva Pro" — but it is an add-on, so the cost stacks |
The free-plan export loophole is worth stating plainly, because it changes the decision: when the free allowance runs out, you lose the ability to generate — not the ability to export what you already generated. In our test the 8-slide AI deck came out as a real, editable PowerPoint file even though the allowance was spent. If you only need AI a few times a year, paying US$144 to lift a ceiling you hit twice is a bad trade.
6. Three ways to get more AI, and what they cost
Canva lists three routes in its FAQ. Only one of them is a plan upgrade.
- Upgrade the plan. Pro is 10x Free, Business is 20x Free. Published prices: Pro US$18/month or US$144/year; Business US$25/month or US$250/year.
- AI Pass. A monthly add-on for Pro and Business subscribers who buy online. Canva's banner describes it as unlocking "40x more AI than Canva Pro — or 20x more than Canva Business". The price is not published on the pricing page; it appears at checkout.
- AI top-ups. A one-time purchase for Business subscribers only. Canva says it gives you the same amount as your monthly allowance, valid for 30 days. Again, no published price.
7. How to make the allowance last
Three habits, based on how the metering is described rather than on a controlled test:
- Use the tools Canva says do not count. Translate and Magic Write are named as "abundant" tools that do not draw from the monthly allowance on paid plans, subject to fair use. Drafting text and translating are exactly the tasks people waste generated-image credits on.
- Get the structure right before you generate. Complex tasks and mixed-tool workflows push you to the low end of the range, per Canva's own wording. Write the outline yourself, then generate once, rather than letting the AI iterate through five drafts.
- Stop at the first good output. Regenerating an image until it is perfect is the single fastest way to burn a pooled allowance. If the first result is usable, use it and move on.
Frequently asked questions
- How many AI uses does Canva Free give you per month?
- Canva no longer publishes a number. As of 2 November 2026 the free plan is described as having "limited access to Standard and Premium AI tools", with no Ultra AI access. In October 2026 the same page said 20 AI uses per month on Free against 200 on Pro.
- Does the Canva Pro free trial give you more AI?
- No. Canva states the AI allowance during a trial is the same as Canva Free, and the full 10x allowance starts when you begin a paid plan. You can test the editor and templates during a trial, but not the AI allowance.
- Why did my Canva AI allowance run out so fast?
- Because one task is not one use. Canva says usage depends on the tool tier, task complexity, and whether you mix tools. In our test the free allowance was spent after one background removal and one AI presentation.
- Which Canva AI tools do not use up the allowance?
- Canva names Translate and Magic Write as tools that can be used abundantly without counting against the monthly allowance on paid plans, with all Standard AI tools included except on Pro Lite. Fair use limits apply.
- When does the allowance reset?
- Monthly, on a calendar cycle. Our blocked screen named 1 November specifically, which points to a calendar-month reset rather than a rolling 30 days.
- Can I buy more AI without upgrading?
- AI Pass is a monthly add-on for Pro and Business subscribers who buy online. AI top-ups are a one-time Business purchase, valid 30 days. Neither price is published on the pricing page.
